How is Boke pronounced?
It rhymes with Coke and smoke.
What does Boke mean?
Maurice Mireau and I (Bruce Duggan) invented this word about 30 years ago, when we were working on some projects together.
We wanted a short, simple, memorable word we could use to brand our events. So we came up with Boke. Like Kodak, we wanted a word that was inherently meaningless, so that we could make it mean whatever we wanted.
Maurice has gone on to bigger and better things, but I still find it a useful brand name to use.
What’s with all the flowers on this website?
Even though our original intention was to invent a meaningless word, it turns out that there are a number of words that are spelt and/or pronounced like Boke.
Boke is the Japanese name for a shrub English-speaking people usually call flowering quince (Latin name: Chaenomeles). All the flowers on this website are varieties of flowering quince; they are all boke.
Is Bruce Duggan the same person as the Boke poet & filmmaker MB Duggan?
Yes.
